2024 Alumni Merit Award
Craig Barrow III
Craig Barrow III’s (AB’65) family ties to the university span nine generations. Craig III’s late grandfather, Dr. Craig Barrow, graduated from UGA in 1896. Craig III’s father, Craig Barrow, Jr. (AB’29), Craig’s sister (M’71), aunt (BS’36), niece (BFA’90), mother-in-law (M’36) and aunt-in-law (AB’43) also attended the university at various points throughout the 20th century.
Craig III’s commitment to the university, however, goes beyond his family’s legacy of alumni. The Wormsloe Historic Site in Savannah, Georgia, has been in Craig III’s family since 1737, when Georgia colonist Noble Jones, a direct ancestor of the Barrows, established the site. A substantial portion of the Wormsloe land — 750 acres in total — was eventually donated to the state of Georgia in an effort to conserve and democratize access to the land.
Craig III and his wife, Diana, have lived on the Wormsloe family property since 1986, and are committed to supporting research and education at the estate. In 2013, Craig III arranged for the Wormsloe Foundation to donate 15 acres of the Isle of Hope estate to become the Center for Research and Education at Wormsloe (CREW), offering new academic opportunities to students and faculty at the University of Georgia. In 2016, Craig began raising funds for the Experiential Learning Center on UGA’s campus at Wormsloe. Under Craig’s leadership and his and Diana’s own philanthropy, in addition to the tremendous support from the Wormsloe Foundation and others, the Experiential Learning Center was dedicated in 2023. Wormsloe’s unique landscape and the Barrows’ meticulous documentation of human activity onsite offer UGA students and faculty unparalleled opportunities for academic research, education and community outreach.
Craig III is a founding member of the UGA Libraries’ Board of Visitors, a founder and former Chair of the UGA Press Advisory Council, as well as a UGA Foundation Emeritus Trustee. He led the fundraising effort to build the new Richard B. Russell Jr. Special Collections Libraries Building at UGA and is a member of the Abraham Baldwin Giving Society at the university.
In 2004, Craig III established the Craig Barrow Fund at the Georgia Historical Society to honor his father and grandfather, ensuring that their shared love of Georgia history will continue in perpetuity. Because of these efforts, Craig III received the John Macpherson Berrien Award for lifetime achievement in Georgia history from the Georgia Historical Society in 2006. In 2010, Craig and his family received Family of the Year from the UGA Alumni Association, and in 2014, he was honored as a Preservation Hero by the Library of American Landscape.
Among his many community activities, Craig III currently works as Managing Director at Stifel Financial in Savannah, Georgia.
“By donating the Wormsloe land to the University of Georgia, Craig has cemented his legacy as a selfless steward of conservation and environmental preservation. [His giving] will continue to pay dividends to the people of Georgia and the university long into the future.”
