For more than 70 years the foundation has been dedicated to achieving its primary objective of supporting the University of Georgia’s academic mission. Since the foundation’s establishment in 1937, the board of trustees has worked to build an endowment that would provide a perpetual source of funding for scholarships, chairs and professorships, and for other academically-focused endeavors.

Thanks to donor generosity, and the board’s diligent stewardship of gifts to the university, success is evident in the fact that the foundation’s total endowment has grown from $3,000 in 1937 to approximately $500 million today. This growth is a tribute to the continued generosity - in good economic times and bad - of those who love the University of Georgia and want to perpetuate its legacy as one of the greatest institutions of higher learning in the United States.

Over the last five years, the foundation has provided more than $120 million to the university for academic support. The board of trustees continues to execute a plan that assures the nation's economic downturn will not hinder its ability to fulfill the University of Georgia Foundation’s primary mission. To that end, the board manages the endowment under a strict set of guidelines that guarantee the foundation has the liquidity necessary to meet all obligations to the university through 2011, regardless of what additional turns the economy may take.

These forward-thinking actions allowed us to provide an additional $533,000 this year in support for scholarships and faculty endowments on top of more than $21 million already allocated to the university. Perhaps more importantly, we have laid the groundwork that will allow the foundation to maintain a high-level of support for the university in the years beyond 2011.

Through it all, our primary objective is to uphold the trust you, our donors, have placed in us to manage your gifts. It is a trust we hold sacred and one to which we will continue directing our very best efforts.
